Communal Sound Activations

SíncoPaz is a sound project that taps into an ancient truth passed down through the ages: rhythm and sound as the heartbeat of connection. Originally founded by Angela Chi-Chi Glass and now co-led with Peta Robles Izquierdo—a master cajón teacher and performer from Lima, Perú—SíncoPaz creates communal sound activations through rhythm, sound, and dialogue in Spanish and English.

SíncoPaz explores the power of síncopa (syncopation) - those on and off beats that build richness and complexity - and paz (peace) as a way to find connection through rhythm. We will play cajónes and create instruments from surprising everyday gear. You are invited to master infectious rhythms, share beats and sing along in English and Spanish.

This project dives into the active creation of sound through the powerful phenomenon of sympathetic resonance—the natural ability of people to literally vibe together and attune to shared frequencies. By actively connecting through rhythm and sound, we unlock the potential for deeper connections between each other.

In the drum circle, every beat and every note is a pulse of shared energy. Each participant actively shapes and responds to the vibrations around them. This resonance goes beyond mere sound—it's a pathway to start conversations that transcend spoken language. At its core, SíncoPaz draws on the ancient wisdom that rhythm can shift our physical state: a melody can alter our emotions....harmony can open our minds. Through the intentional creation of collective beats - this project aims to break down barriers. As we drum together, our individual vibrations sync, inviting us to explore how sound connects us all. For all ages - come as you are and leave rhythmically locked in!

Síncopaz was incubated through Art as Social Practice CUNY and continues to grow through workshops and collaborations across the Berkshires and beyond.
